“The trumpet soloist Barry Bauguess was one exception, giving a spot-on performance full of flair and nobility in The Trumpet Shall Sound.”
The Oregonian
Bauguess' valveless instrument is a fiendishly difficult precursor to the modern trumpet. Each note is produced with a combination of skill and luck. Playing on a copy of a 1720 instrument, Bauguess combined the right notes with soft articulations, athletic lip trills and virtuosic registral shifts throughout the concert
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
...his intonation is excellent, and his accuracy, phenomenal. I am particularly taken with his style of articulation. In some recordings of this piece, the trumpet is, well, too trumpet-like ... in other words, too staccato, particularly in the fanfare figures which dominate the opening movement. Bauguess more lyrical approach turns the piece into a true soprano-trumpet duet. His trills, especially the long ones on g'', are very expressive.

Barry Bauguess cannily balanced the martial and the melodic in Purcells Trumpet Sonata.

Bauguess coaxed fine solos from the difficult instrument.

Exciting trumpeter!
Frankfurter Allgemeine
It therefore became all the more impressive when, during the many solos which Bauguess played during the concert, he displayed such controlled technique, light attacks, sweet tone and fluid musicianship.
